The '$18 trillion' investment claim: the White House's own tally was about half

Trump has said $18 trillion to $22 trillion in investment is pouring into the country. His own website listed $9.6 trillion, much of it vague pledges.

Dec. 2025 - Feb. 2026  |  Summary by Accountability Desk, based on the reporting credited below

Since late 2025, Trump has repeatedly said investment commitments since his return to office total $18 trillion, and sometimes $22 trillion. At the time, the White House's own website listed $9.6 trillion (later $9.7 trillion) in investment announcements.

Even that number is inflated, fact-checkers found. It includes multi-year aspirations, trade and purchase goals, and pledges that predate the second term. A Bloomberg Economics analysis counted about $7 trillion as real investment pledges. PolitiFact rated the $18 trillion claim False, and CNN's fact check of the State of the Union called the figure fiction.
